This Is Not About Fame

Submitted on May 20, 2015 by  MariaHIVMejia

My spirit gets shaken when people write me and tell me they want to get famous for having HIV. This is not about fame or us!! It's about saving lives and giving hope to the hopeless!!! For me, I did thousands of hours as a volunteer for my hospital and for the Red Cross, getting trained by the health department for testing and to be a peer educator. Almost 16 years working daily and with no pay. This is my passion! Yes, I got known little by little...this is not a competition!!! It's not cool to be known for ‪#‎HIV‬!! This is not a fame or celebrity thing! And if you think that you can run before you crawl, you will find yourself frustrated and will burn out. You have to do the work…and not have in your mind that you will be famous and rich over saying you have HIV. Millions of people live with HIV.
