Intro - LaWanda

Submitted on Jun 28, 2017 by  LaWanda37

Hello, my name is LaWanda Wilkerson. I have been HIV positive for three years this past April. The way I found out has changed my whole life and I am definitely not the same person I was three years ago.

The day I found out I was HIV positive I will never forget. I had just gotten back from bus duty. I had a message on my phone from my doctor’s office. I thought it was no big deal, so I called back. The next words were deafening. “You are HIV positive. We have sent your file to the clinic that deals with infectious diseases.” That was it.

In the aftermath of the phone call I was numb. I sat in my classroom frozen. I had no idea how to tell my family. What will they think? How will they feel? It took two weeks and me having pneumonia before I finally told my family. But in the meantime I suffered depression which I still suffer with, suicidal thoughts.

After this, my appointment at the clinic put me with people who actually care about and love me.

Why LaWanda wants to be part of A Girl Like Me: I want to be a blogger with A Girl Like Me to help others through words of encouragement and support so they will hopefully not experience the things that I have.

It took years before I could come out publically so I applaud your strength and courage.  I have now been living with HIV for almost 32 years (October 2017 will be 32 years since my world changed).  The medication today works and keeps us healthy.  We can still follow our dreams and live a somewhat "normal" life.  Although my life is far from "normal".  My life is wonderful despite some of the craziness.  Good luck with all you do and I am glad you are here!

Hello Lawanda. Thank you for sharing your diagnosis story with us. I know it was not easy. Your experience to learning your status sounds similar to mine. I was on the bus heading home from work and received a phone call. After being told I was positive, the doctor on the other end of the phone had no more to say. I sat like you in silence. I didn't tell anyone. I just started searching out treatment methods. Nearly 5 years later, I am the healthiest I have ever been. I have also found family here within A Girl Like Me. We are here for each other and would love the opportunity to be there for you as well. Make use of our resources and fact sheets. We have groups you can partake in as well. Get your thoughts out and don't allow them to consume you. We are with you every step of the way.

Again, welcome my sister.
