There is this great quote by Maya Angelou, "If someone shows you who they are. Believe them." The funny thing is every time I hear the quote being used often the person is remarking how someone has shown a negative side of themselves. I have had the pleasure over the last year getting to see someone and I do believe them. They are brilliant, passionate, and funny. They have been an inspiration to me and a reminder of who I once was, still am, and could be.
It is sometimes very easy to habitually work at something that you no longer see its purpose. You no longer see the beauty of the thing. Madonna, the young woman who worked in our office this past year shined a light on my work, my purpose, the very thing that had begun to dim. And instead of seeing a lost in is luster I saw the possibility of things again through her eyes.
I not only saw her but she allowed me to see myself. I am forever grateful. So in the words of Dr. Angelou, "If someone shows you who they are. Believe them." Recognize the funny, sensitive, caring, brilliant people that our fellow sisters are. I did and received a very special gift in return. I only hope that in her time in our office I gave her as much as she gave me.
