Please welcome a new contributor to our Voices from our Allies page on A Girl Like Me, Sonya Mallard. Please scroll down to view her first blog " Erasing Stigma 1 Church at a Time", as well as more about Sonya. When HIV/AIDS first came out in the public eye, a lot of people of color automatically stigmatized HIV as a gay white disease. So they went around with this notion in their heads that they couldn’t possibly contract HIV. As time went on, that notion was proven wrong. In the Black community, HIV/AIDS grew and grew and grew. And now we are living in a modern epidemic, in which 46% of...

Tiffany posts a new blog in our “Voices from our Allies” section: “ The Headline Reads" The headline reads, "HIV Among Black Women 5 times Higher than Previously Thought" It was some of the biggest news in HIV last week. And I'm still not sure how to take it. Yay, I'm excited that I have data to support what I've known all along. Information from a study conducted in six US cities with incidence rates among Black women that rival those of sub-Saharan nations. Now the scary part...how will people use this data to push an agenda that could be contrary to good public health policy and initiatives...

Over the past couple years, The Well Project (TWP) has observed a transformation--one that is too big to ignore. Our web portal and online resources, originally designed and built in 2002 for a US-based audience, have increasingly become a resource for women living with HIV all over the world. In 2011, over 70% of our 1.5+ million visitors were from outside of the US, a trend which continues to grow. This is no surprise, as according to the latest UNAIDS statistics, women and girls comprise over half of all people living with HIV. Today, in conjunction with and in honor of International...

Tiffany posts a new blog in our "Voices from our Allies" section about World AIDS Day: " In a whisper" I knew I wanted to write something for World AIDS Day but I was actually stuck about what to write. Every year my job hosts an awards ceremony honoring people who have made strides locally to impact HIV/AIDS research, community development, and policy. This year was no different. Part of my role in this event involves assisting with the logistics of it all and rarely do I get a chance to fully engage in the ceremony. But this year I was especially excited about the event considering the...

People who are HIV positive have had a long history of playing the HIV ‘waiting game’ When HIV was first discovered, we all waited for treatment. We waited for medications, anything that would help stop the virus from killing us. We waited for doctors who were willing to see us; in the beginning very few were. Some of us waited for death; wanting it to come quickly and rid us of our pain. We waited for our government to respond to the crisis; we waited a long time. We waited for compassion, for tolerance, for love; some of which we are still waiting for. We waited for forgiveness from...
