Tiffany posted a new blog “ Even in my compassion, I have lacked action” on A Girl Like Me’s “Voices from our Allies” page: …That is what she said in response to the hearing of another young woman dead in our community as she urged her friends on facebook to have a call to arms. I was so struck by the statement that I knew it had to be my own. How many of us have heard the numbers about HIV/AIDS in our community and still lacked action? How many of us know someone in the community that has been discriminated against because of their status and done nothing? How many times have you said this is...

Sonya posted a new blog “ It is My Business” on A Girl Like Me's "Voices from our Allies" page: Did you ever stop to think that just maybe, your actions are affecting me? I know you say all the time “what I do is my business, I’m not hurting anyone”, but the fact of the matter is that yes, you are hurting me! I sit and watch you day in/day out, and listen to your plight. You tell me how fatigue you are, how you are discharging, and don’t have any appetite, but in the same breathe you are also saying “it’s nobody business that you are infected with AIDS”…REALLY! Here is a REALITY check my...

New post from Tiffany on "Voices from our Allies": The World is Watching! The world is watching as news of two more cured come out of IAS. The world is watching as questions about the “End of AIDS” seem more plausible than ever before especially for those of us who remember bold claims of yester year that we once believed only to have our hopes dashed by a virus more adept at adapting and mutating into something far more complex than what had been seen before. It has been 20 plus years since the International AIDS Conference has been on US soil and it is much different than it was then. We in...

Sonya posted a new blog " Let's Applaud Each Other" in Voice from our Allies: Let’s Applaud Each Other Let’s Stand up and Applaud each other …for survival, strength, determination, Purpose, and Destiny….Now, take a look around you …look to your neighbors on your left and now look to your neighbors on the right…. Startling stats tell us that 1 out of 5 people don’t know their status…is that you? I would never have believed or asked to be affected by HIV, but I believe that in all things there is a purpose; and I’m here before you on behalf of the affected people who are unable to speak because...

Please welcome a new contributor to our Voices from our Allies page on A Girl Like Me, Sonya Mallard. Please scroll down to view her first blog " Erasing Stigma 1 Church at a Time", as well as more about Sonya. When HIV/AIDS first came out in the public eye, a lot of people of color automatically stigmatized HIV as a gay white disease. So they went around with this notion in their heads that they couldn’t possibly contract HIV. As time went on, that notion was proven wrong. In the Black community, HIV/AIDS grew and grew and grew. And now we are living in a modern epidemic, in which 46% of...

Tiffany posts a new blog in our “Voices from our Allies” section: “ The Headline Reads" The headline reads, "HIV Among Black Women 5 times Higher than Previously Thought" It was some of the biggest news in HIV last week. And I'm still not sure how to take it. Yay, I'm excited that I have data to support what I've known all along. Information from a study conducted in six US cities with incidence rates among Black women that rival those of sub-Saharan nations. Now the scary part...how will people use this data to push an agenda that could be contrary to good public health policy and initiatives...

Over the past couple years, The Well Project (TWP) has observed a transformation--one that is too big to ignore. Our web portal and online resources, originally designed and built in 2002 for a US-based audience, have increasingly become a resource for women living with HIV all over the world. In 2011, over 70% of our 1.5+ million visitors were from outside of the US, a trend which continues to grow. This is no surprise, as according to the latest UNAIDS statistics, women and girls comprise over half of all people living with HIV. Today, in conjunction with and in honor of International...

Tiffany posts a new blog in our "Voices from our Allies" section about World AIDS Day: " In a whisper" I knew I wanted to write something for World AIDS Day but I was actually stuck about what to write. Every year my job hosts an awards ceremony honoring people who have made strides locally to impact HIV/AIDS research, community development, and policy. This year was no different. Part of my role in this event involves assisting with the logistics of it all and rarely do I get a chance to fully engage in the ceremony. But this year I was especially excited about the event considering the...
