The Stigma In Healthcare

Submitted on Jan 13, 2014 by  jae001

I do have to say how dismayed I am to see how bad the stigma in healthcare is...I have been at my current job for a very short time. Most of the employees are fine if you are HIV+ and need help...For issues they seem to be okay with; chest pain, trauma etc... But if you are pregnant...LOOK OUT! The opinions FLY! I recently had an experience that I had to educate the doctor and other colleagues that it was okay to be pregnant if you are HIV+. I did tell them that it is always better if the pregnancy is planned, because the outcome can be better, due to medication complications for example. The doctor said he was thankful to have a "go to person" pertaining to HIV and pregnancy. I think I have set myself up to having to go to more classes, LOL. It has been 18 years since I have had my last child. He is HIV free and graduating from high school this year! I had decided to start going to more classes to become more knowledgeable about the new protocols when it comes to pregnancy and HIV. I hope  this will help me convey to my fellow co-workers the truths when it comes to this topic. I feel that this is an opportunity to change a few opinions for the better. Have a Great 2014 ~ JAE

My son is 3years and I'm now 4years living with this illness. He is HIV-. Today I went to get my CD4 count results and my Dr was shocked. He asked me if I was taking ARVs n I'm not. My viral load is only 250. I'm just praying that I can live until my son is a grown man
