Karine is an Associate Professor at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health (IDGPH), and Adjunct Faculty at the UNC Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health in the Department of Health Policy and Management (HPM). She is a senior socio-behavioral scientist and experienced research program manager who integrates biomedical research, social sciences, empirical ethics, and patient engagement in infectious diseases research in the United States and sub-Saharan Africa. Her current focus is on the socio-behavioral aspects of HIV cure-related research. She has also worked in the areas of HIV prevention, HIV treatment, Ebola, malaria, HSV-2 and more recently, Hepatitis B. Karine is passionate about centering the voice of the patient – and the voice of women – in HIV cure-related research across the lifespan. She is currently implementing leading research incorporating a trauma-informed/healing-centered framework among young women in collaboration with the Females Rising through Education, Support and Health (FRESH) cohort in Durban, South Africa.
