Jennifer Sherwood, PhD, MPH is the Director of Research at amfAR's Public Policy Office based in Washington DC. In this role, she leads amfAR's policy-related research portfolio in the areas of gender, women's health, and sexual and reproductive health and rights.
Dr. Sherwood's research has focused on improving gender equity in global HIV policy and programming. This has included a 45-country study to investigate the effects of the Global Gag Rule on recipients of U.S HIV funding and a 60-country study to examine trans inclusion in National HIV/AIDS Strategic Plans. Her research has been included as evidence in the Lancet, National Public Radio, the Government Accountability Office report on international family planning, and U.S. Senate subcommittee hearings for global health.
She is currently leading the HIV & HPV Coalition for Cancer Prevention (H2C) –a global expert working group of scientists, funders, and policy makers focused on expanding the role of private philanthropy and public funding to eliminate HIV and HPV-related cancers. Dr. Sherwood holds a PhD and MPH from the Population, Family, and Reproductive Health department at Johns Hopkins University and a BA in Anthropology and Gender Studies from Rollins College. She serves on the board of Funders Concerned about AIDS (FCAA) and on the private foundation constituency of the board for the Global Fund.
