Webinar: Women and HIV Cure (Part 3) - November 17, 2016

November 17, 2016

1:00 - 2:30pm EST

via Women's HIV Research Collaborative (WHRC)

Kate Borloglou, Community Advisory Board member and A Girl Like Me blogger is one of three featured presenters for part three of WHRC's Women and HIV Cure webinar series.

From WHRC: In recent years, the scientific community has made great strides toward finding a cure for HIV. Women, however, are often excluded or otherwise left out of HIV cure efforts. The members of the Women’s HIV Research Collaborative (WHRC) believe that cure research must include women—cisgender and transgender alike—in order to produce results that are applicable and meaningful to women. In this spirit of sisterhood and the meaningful involvement of people with HIV, the WHRC has assembled a diverse group of expert women working in community advocacy, biomedical research, and bioethics to guide us through this three-part webinar series.

Part 3: Barriers and Facilitators to Women’s Participation in HIV Cure Research

The final webinar in this series takes a pragmatic approach to women’s access to HIV cure research. Laura Smeaton will share the results of a recent analysis of the screening and enrollment of women in studies conducted by the AIDS Clinical Trials Group. Kate Borloglou will present an activist perspective, describing what makes it difficult for women to take part in clinical trials and other aspects of cure research. Both presenters will outline some key reasons that women don’t—or can’t—participate in cure research, as well as what factors make women’s participation more likely. Liz Barr will conclude the series with a call to action to advance the HIV cure agenda for all people who identify as women. By the end of the webinar, attendees will:

  • Understand issues in trial design and sociocultural factors that discourage women from participating in cure research
  • Be able to describe factors that may facilitate women’s participation in HIV cure research
  • Have action steps they can take as researchers, activists, and community members to improve women’s chances of benefitting from HIV cure research

The Women’s HIV Research Collaborative is a working group of the Legacy Project at the Office of HIV/AIDS Network Coordination.
