U=U is a growing international movement to share the fact that people living with HIV on treatment with an undetectable viral load cannot transmit HIV to sexual partners. U=U is based on the principle that all people living with HIV have a right to accurate and meaningful information about their social, sexual, and reproductive health based on science not stigma.
U=U was launched in early 2016 by a group of people living with HIV who created a groundbreaking Consensus Statement with global experts to clear up confusion about the science of U=U. That Statement was the genesis of the U=U movement that is changing the definition of what it means to live with HIV. The movement is sharing the message to dismantle HIV stigma, improve the lives of people living with HIV, and bring us closer to ending the epidemic.
The U=U movement now consists of over 915 organizations in nearly 100 countries, all committed to sharing the news about U=U. Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of NIAID at the National Institutes of Health recently said that "U=U is the foundation of being able to end the HIV epidemic," and CDC recently updated its estimate of effective HIV treatment, or U=U, to 100% when a person living with HIV is on their medication regimen as prescribed and has an undetectable viral load.
