HIV is Not a Crime (HINAC) is a biennial gathering of people living with HIV (PLHIV), HIV policy leaders and other stakeholders, primarily from the U.S., that educates and trains advocates and centers PLHIV leadership to end HIV criminalization, mass incarceration, racism and social injustice.
The HIV is Not a Crime VI (HINAC6) Scholarship Work Group is now accepting nominations for scholarships for the HIV Is Not a Crime VI National Training Academy to be held at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. The HINAC6 partner organizations – SERO Project, Positive Women's Network – USA , Positively Trans, and U.S. PLHIV Caucus – are inviting anyone to participate in the scholarship process by simply nominating an advocate they feel should experience HINAC6. We are looking to prioritize advocates and community leaders in supporting them to bring the strategies and tips shared at the training academy back to their community but who would not have the resources or sponsorship to attend otherwise. Priority consideration will be given to people living with HIV, people of trans or gender non-conforming experience, harm reduction advocates, people of color, survivors of HIV criminalization, and sex workers – we are looking to uplift those in southern states as well.
Previous HINAC scholarship attendees have been able to leave the training academy since 2014 equipped to organize and lead coalitions that have made measurable reform progress in states like Iowa (2014), Colorado (2016), California (2017), Michigan and N. Carolina health codes (2018), Washington state (2020), Illinois, Missouri, Nevada and Virginia (2021), and most recently Georgia and New Jersey (2022). Our goal is to continue to uplift and support advocates to have the tools, empowerment and support they need when they return to their local stakeholders and push for further change.
The process for scholarship applications is designed to take away application fatigue and provide potential participants a more creative opportunity to express why they think attending HINAC6 will be a benefit to their advocacy work, leadership development and community impact. Advocates can be nominated by requesting a nomination from a fellow community member. When that nomination is received by the scholarship review team, the person nominated will receive an email to confirm their nomination by completing an application. Only individuals nominated will be allowed to submit the written scholarship application. The scholarship nomination application process closes at 11:00 p.m. eastern standard time Monday, October 7th and the scholarship application process closes at 11:00 p.m. eastern standard time on Monday, October 21st.
To learn more about the scholarship process, you may register to join the Tuesday, August 27th HINAC6 Scholarship Webinar at 6 pm ET. A recording and slides will be shared for those who cannot attend. The nomination form will be made available after the webinar on August 27, 2024.
